The 2018 STRONG KOREA Forum was held at the Millennium Hotel in Seoul on May 31st, 2018. Several hundred people from the science, policy, education and technology sectors in South Korea attended this event, including the Minister for Science and ICT. This year’s main focus was “Science Technology Breaking the limits, Imagination to a Reality”. The STRONG KOREA Forum is hosted and co-organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, The Korea Economic Daily, the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) and the Korea Intellectual Property Service Center. This forum is now in its 17th year and its aim is to identify basic strategies to strengthen science and technology in Korea.

During his lecture on “Decarbonizing our planet – an opportunity for actionable science in South Korea” Axel Timmermann discussed several examples on how to translate basic science to policies and applications with an immediate benefit to society and mankind – “actionable science”. One of the examples he touched upon are the efforts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and how its 5th Assessment Report provided the scientific backbone for the 2015 Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to prevent future dangerous warming of our planet. Axel emphasized “the need to reduce the gap between women and men in science”. He also suggested that South Korea’s education system must be changed to awaken and bolster the intellectual independence of high school and university students.

‘STRONG KOREA Forum 2018’ was held at the Millennium Hilton Hotel in Seoul on 31st.
